It could be said that there is an affinity between theatre design and grand garden design.
Both seek to render the real unreal for effect and to give impressions of grand scale in a limited space through the use of Trompe L’oeuil effects. The Greatest theatrical designers, from Bakst to Georgiadis and Trevelyan, have manipulated visual effects in the same way that great landscape designers have, in order to convey an impression, often through impressionistic means.

The new Designers Guild collections this year pick up on many of these themes. In addition to a repertoire of fine prints and wallpapers, elegant patterned weaves and silks, this season they included stunning panel designs digitally printed in palettes impossible to reproduce with conventional printing techniques.
